The Stigma Around People with Disabilities

the-stigma-around-people-with-disabilities

There is a stigma around people with disabilities. They are often stereotyped as people who are incapable of caring for themselves and would always require a sitter, incapable of working, and incapable of making their own decisions. Having a disability is often linked to helplessness or disease.

Even people with a single disability are often presumed to have several other disabilities. For example, someone with a speech impairment is sometimes presumed to have an intellectual disability. There is also a stigma in the workplace where the employer assumes that the person with a disability cannot handle certain tasks and, thus, does not accept them for employment.

March is National Disability Awareness Month, and as a provider of disability care in Orlando, Florida, we encourage you to participate in spreading awareness about the rights of people with disabilities. Let’s acknowledge their contributions and provide opportunities to help them lead fulfilling lives. We also encourage you to call them by their names and avoid associating them with words like handicapped. And lastly, we encourage employers not to discriminate against people with disabilities and the tasks they are capable of doing.
